Baby Freebie: Free Car Seat Program for Low Income Families

A car seat is one of the most important items an expectant mom needs for her unborn child. Many hospitals will not allow a mother to leave the hospital unless she has a car seat for her child. I know personally how expensive car seats are! Even the cheap ones can seem like a lot of money when you are stretching pennies. Nowadays, many states have programs that will provide a free car seat for families based on income.

Here are some places you should call to find out about the Car Seat Program in your area.

1. Local WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Office- If you are already enrolled in the WIC program, call and inquire about the Car Seat Program. Most WIC offices require you to take a 2 hour class on car seat safety.
2. State Police and Fire Departments- Call or visit your local state police and fire department to see if they offer free car seats. Some states receive grants that allow them to provide free car seats to low-income families.
3. Hospitals and Birth Centers- Call or visit your local hospital or birth center to see if they offer free car seats to low income families or if they know of any programs that provide free car seats.
